- Do you have a budget in mind?
- When do you want the renovation to be completed?
Once you’ve selected a contractor, be prepared for the many questions and decisions that will follow. Many decisions will need to be made before the project starts.
Will you be removing and/or replacing any bathroom fixtures?
Most renovations will involve removing the existing fixtures so that the renovation can take place. Do you have another bathroom to use while the bathroom under renovation is out of commission?
Will you be replacing any bathroom fixtures?
If so, you’ll want to order these prior to the removal of the existing fixtures. The removal and replacement can happen at the same time unless new flooring is being installed.
Will you be replacing the flooring?
If so, you will want the new flooring installed before the toilet and cabinets are reinstalled. Flooring will need to go around the toilet and under the cabinets to allow for a seamless look.
Often renovations are in spaces that have awkward configurations making custom cabinetry the only option. Or, you may want to add storage to the room by adding cabinetry. Knowing how you want to use your bathroom will determine the cabinetry choices to make.
The use of the bathroom will likely determine the finishes you may select. Is the bathroom in a high-traffic area? Will children use the bathroom? Is it the powder room or your main bathroom, therefore requiring additional storage?
There are multiple flooring options. For new construction, any type of flooring can be considered. In a renovation, the condition and height of the sub floor can limit the flooring choices that you can choose from.
- Tile. A popular choice, it is known for its durability and waterproofing.
- Rubber. Not a common choice, it has acoustical and waterproofing qualities that make it common consideration.
- Vinyl. It is readily available, easy to install and is water resistant, comfortable, warm to the feet and is expensive compared to other options.
- Sheet linoleum.
- Natural wood. Not recommended in any room where moisture might cause damage.
- Concrete. Although durable, it is a hard surface and is commonly heated when used adding to its cost.
- Laminate. Keep in mind that water can cause damage to this type of flooring and therefore is not recommended.
- Bamboo.
